School Safety
Safety and security in schools is a global crisis characterized by rampant fire outbreaks causing death and injuries to learners.M3vent Consults has designed tools and control measures to curb vices that compromise the safety and security of schools and other learning institutions. In our systematic approach, the follow aspects are addressed:
• To develop school safety policies, procedures, guidelines and measures.
• To advocate for safe learning environment for learners, educators and support staff.
• To initiate school safety and security committees (SSSCs) at schools and other learning institutions.
• To provide guidelines on having schools as dangerous object – free zones that are physically and psychologically safe for learners, educators and non-educators.
• To provide mentoring and counselling services to learners at risk or who are presenting problematic behavior at school, home or in the community.
• To initiate parents community safety control and risk management systems for all schools and other learning institutions where parents are able to monitor the safety of their children.
• To ensure that schools have safety officers – The person appointed at a school to facilitate safety, and/or safety management departments.
• To provide basic fire training to learners, teaching and non-teaching staff, and management.
• To ensure that schools and other learning institutions have fire suppression systems, supported with firefighting equipment, smoke detectors, fire alarms and extinguishers.
- To develop checklists, safety plans, evacuation plans, and incident reporting procedures.
- To provide internal and external audits, fire drills, and safety inspections for schools and other learning institutions. Audits cover key area of electricity, combustion, dormitories or hostels, kitchen, class room, and other facilities.
- To ensure that schools and learning institutions have first aid kits/boxes and undertake first aid training especially for the school safety and security committees (SSSCs).
- To ensure that schools and other learning institutions have ambulances, medical aid, and insurance.
- To ensure that schools have CCTV cameras and tight security.
- To identify extremely high-risk and low- risk schools and other learning institutions that are prone to fires, crimes, gang-infested, drugs and immorality.
- To advocate for fire safety studies and lesson on school co-curriculum activities.
- To incorporate strong safety cultures and holistic approach of changing how the whole school operates as far as safety is concerned that involves appointing of safety student, holding parents and teacher safety meetings, safety magazines or information on school notice boards.
- To provide safety signage, demarcated assembly points, emergency routes, and PPE.
- To promote safety awareness through notice boards, articles, talk shows, and magazines, etc.
- To provide crime prevention strategies to combat crime and violence that threaten and have an impact on schools and other learning institutions.
- To provide accident and incident investigation and reporting.
